Oh the places you will go.... This post is coming to you live (well somewhat delayed live) from a Metrolink train somewhere near Norwalk as I have joined the ranks of the undead, or those who go out of their way, loose sleep and run and gun in an attempt to make the train on time. Personally, I love mass transit. While it is possible to write a blog post on a crackberry in the middle of the eternal parking lot known as the 5 North, who would want to. Depending on what you drive though it may be cheaper. A ten trip pass to "ride the rails" costs $55.00, a monthly pass from the ANA costs about $187.00. If I drove an SUV, a metrolink pass would be the best deal on the planet. But passing up the opportunity to buy a sports car in my twenty-somethings in order to afford law school, I purchased a Civic instead. Great gas mileage, satellite radio, and I don't have to do the undead shuffle while cradiling my Tazo Earl Grey Tea, (Which is too hot when I make it and too cold when I want to drink it) and wretching my back lugging my laptop around through underground Los Angeles. But after doing the math, a monthly pass for the train may not seem like such a bad deal. I figure the daily commute into L.A. consumes about 2 gallons of gas each way (approx. 45 miles, so about 23 MPG). So operating my car would cost me roughly $18 a day (Parking is not much of an issue, work comps it). So five days of commuting would add up to about $95 or so in Gas about every two weeks or so. Total commuting expenses would be about $190-200 or so in a full-time month, while a train pass would save me $10 (but not the monthly car payment. Then there are the other reasons. L.A. offers so many other cultural events, that if I want to enjoy one after work, and I took the train, I would be out of luck. But then the cost of parking for having my car would have to be figured in. Go Figure. So either way I'm screwed and out more of my hard earned cash. I don't mind being a law clerk/paralegal, I don't mind working in downtown L.A. What I do mind is the two hour rush hour. WDR.
