"On My Honor....." The recent controversy with Douglas Smith , a member of the National Leadership of the Boy Scouts of America, has shown the lows the organization has reached. The last line of the scout oath reads, To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. I followed these words to the "t", yet some members of the organization continue to think they are just words and that they can be a tool to drum out those who do not subscribe to their declaration of religious principles. Now here is where I point out the hypocrisy of the Boy Scouts position. In a letter written by a scoutmaster and lawyer who was opposed to the dismissal of James Dale from the organization, Douglas Smith stated "some intolerant elements in our society want to force scouting to abandon its values and become fundamentally different."(NY Times). Well it did not take an "intolerant element" to change the organization. It took Douglas Smith, and other men and women (yes there are female professionals in Boy Scouts) like him to change the Scouts. Today I call for the national organization to revoke Mr. Smiths N.E.S.A membership, I also ask for them to rethink Mr. Smiths membership in the Order of the Arrow. As a model scout elected into the OA by my peers, I strived to be a role model to my fellow scouts. I am personally offended to know that persons like Mr. Smith are allowed to retain their membership in the Scouts while others like myself are being told that we are not good enough to be scouts. Unfortunately, the recent events show how the BS has been put into the BS of A. Today is the day we chalk one up for the good guys. William Randall Eagle Scout Brotherhood member, Order of the Arrow.
