Happy New Year! Well, Welcome to 2005. Unfortunately, it has not begun on a very good note. Large swaths of the SE Pacific are flooded due to the devastating Tsunamis leaving the rest of world to worry about the dead. While those of us in the First World have the money to fund high tech alarm systems and broadcast equipment, many of those in the Third World where the only notice of the monster waves were the screams of those being swept away. On CBC's the National, the editorial segment discussed how Canada called an emergency session of Parliament to address the disaster. Meanwhile our elected officials in Washington, mainly President Bush, proposed a paltry 15 million dollar aid package. My brother has a point when government will spend trillions of dollars on advance weapon systems but balk when they have to provide foreign aid and assistance to disaster areas. I have even heard the European Union initially believed the initial aid package was due to the impacted areas being primarily Muslim ( I don't doubt for a second that this may have been one of the reasons). So as we enter 2005, I won't make any resolutions except for one. I resolve to enjoy life. To revel in its successes and learn from my defeats and to realize that life is fleeting. Everyday is a new day, and new opportunities present themselves. May 2005 be a great year, and not just an endless rerun of the last four years. !Feliz Nuevo Ano! -- WDR
