Back in Cali...Oh how I want to go back to Boston! Everybody wants to go to California. Our beaches stretch for miles, we can drive anywhere we want without having to pay a toll, and hot chicks are a dime a dozen. The reality however is that there are more people in Southern California then the infrastructure can support. Approximately 14 million people live in about a 100 square mile area. Our freeways are always jammed, our beaches are more likely to be either closed or crowded, and instead of a mass transportation system that allows people to get from point A to B quickly, the only thing quick is the loud NO from local residents. After spending three weeks in Boston, I felt like I was spoiled to be riding the T. I did not have to pay $2+ per gallon for gas, and I was able to get downtown in less then 20 minutes. I really wanted to go to San Diego to check out the new ballpark for my birthday. So my parents, who like to make simple things very complicated, decided it would be a good idea to take Amtrak to San Diego. The trip south was uneventful, even though the train was full. Some on the train were going to the racetrack at Del Mar, while some of us were going to the Padres game. I was afraid we were going to miss the first pitch, but after getting into San Diego and hoping on the Trolley, we made it with five minutes to spare. The game was OK, but the new park reminds me a lot of Seahawk stadium in Seattle, due to the white structural supports and the hi-def big screen. Afterwards we went to a real dive of a place, "Dick's Last Resort." This is a place where a bad review is considered a badge of honor. We then left to take the 6:30 train home. Normally, Amtrak is on time and I can be home in less than two hours. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Amtrak had cancelled the 6:30 train and failed to tell all of the passengers until the last minute. So two trains worth of people were forced into one train and it was standing room only. I have survived Wall Street at rush hour on the New York Subway, but this was ridiculous. It was so bad Amtrak Police came on board to push people to the front. Happy Freaking Birthday. We'll for those of you who want to move to Cali, please change your mind. We have too many people here as is, and until the powers that be in Sacramento and O.C. get their act together, I would recommend Las Vegas or Seattle as really nice places to live. Every time I fly into the L.A. Basin and see the sprawl from Riverside to Santa Monica I instantly realize how messed up California is.
