My Position on the Pledge Case Today the Supreme Court heard oral argument in the case of Newdow v. Elk Grove School District, otherwise known as the pledge case. I support Dr. Newdow. I believe the phrase "under god" creates an aspect of inferiority among anybody who does not express a religious belief. As a young child, I would not say god in the pledge of allegiance and I received flak from others. People would overemphasize "God" when they recited the oath, or tell the teacher I said it wrong when I did not say god. As a child it was an extremely uncomfortable situtation when it would be my day to lead the class in the pledge. It would have been even harder not to say it eventhough my right is constitutionally protected. I am an American. I'm not a commie pinko liberal as some would like to believe. (okay so they may be right about the liberal part) My father put it best when he said "the purpose of the Constitution is to protect the minority from the majority." The president has made mistakes in interning legal american citizens, the Court has made mistakes in upholding slavery, and Congress has made mistakes by putting political concerns before national concerns. The Constitution allows our government to correct the nations mistakes and ensure that all persons are entitled to a life liberty and the pursuit of happiness without the beliefs of other being forced upon them. The pledge is to our flag and our country, not to a christian god, or even a ceremonial god. I found it funny Justice Rehnquist would ask about the vote in Congress. Of course the vote would be unanomous. Any senator or congressman who voted against the change in the oath, could have just walked right down the hall and turned themselves in to the HUAC. Their political careers would be toast. One Nation, INDIVISIBLE with Liberty and Justice FOR ALL...(not some, not a few, ALL) WDR.
