"Last one out of the Capitol, please turn off the lights..." RanTech on the Road- Why do bad things always have to follow great experiences? On the flight up to SAC, my row was blessed with free drinks. Now I am sitting in the terminal waiting for my plane to show up. Three hours late! I did have a great time at the California Higher Education Summit. I had a great opportunity to meet with local legislators at the capital on three issues important to CSU students. The decoupling of Cal Grants with increases in student fees, The proposed elimination of the Educational Opportunity Program from the 2004-05 budget, and the horrible prices for textbooks. Our delegation of over 20 students represented Cal State Fullerton, and impressed upon the legislators the local and state wide impacts these changes will have on the educational mission of the state. Cuts in the CSU, UC, and CCC systems will have further long term impacts on the state in such areas as health care, crime, jobs, and any possible chance the state would have in pulling itself out of the budget crisis. On a personal note, I would not have missed this conference for the world. When the choice was between a routine job and a chance where I could apply some of the knowledge I have acquired in my Political Science classes. Application of knowledge wins out any day of the week. I realize that I need to open my eyes to opportunities outside of the classroom, and just take a chance to reach my goals. Well, as I sit here in the emptying out SAC Airport, I close out this Blog post with this closing "Those who show up, rule". WDR
