State of Disunion- America in 2004 Tonight, President Bush is scheduled to give his State of the Union Address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress. From what I heard, Bush is going to discuss increased funding for National Security, and a call for the United Nations to assist in holding free elections for the Iraqi people. While both are important issues, I believe it is a little late for Bush to call in the UN when he shut them out prior to Gulf War II and increased funding for National Security is not going to fix some of the more pressing issues plaguing the Department of Homeland Security. Bush needs to realize that a secure nation is a prosperous nation. A nation where its citizens are secure in their person and property. A nation where schools are funded before bullets, where health care is given a greater priority then Moon Missions and corporate handouts. A nation where citizens can achieve anything without having to fear not only terrorism, but their own government as well. President Bush, tonight you may ask Congress to remain ever vigilant in the “war on Terror”, but the true terror is present in the homeless who sleep on the streets, the mentally ill who receive inadequate care, and the children of the inner-cities who fear their classmates more then their next exam. The state of the union is far from strong. It is on life support. Grocery workers have been on strike for over six months without any meaningful negotiations with management. The average college student takes nine months to find a meaningful job after graduating. Some students have become so disillusioned to the current job market that they have quit looking altogether. Companies, like Wal-Mart, continue to slash wages for their workers, while at the same time asking bankrupt State and Local governments to cough up tax concessions and welfare checks. Governments become part of the constant race to the bottom. On the international front, the United States must take on a multilateral approach to international diplomacy. We can no longer “go it alone”. The strain on our Armed Forces is too great as our fighting men and women, who in some cases are not even old enough to drink, are being placed into situations that puzzle the brightest educated minds in the world. The United States must bring in NGO’s to handle some of the strain. Our “coalition of the willing” must become the “coalition of the able”. Any nation that has the ability to be of assistance to form Iraq into a free and democratic country must be able to have some say in the process. We can no longer depend on the “Department of Defense, A subsidiary of Halliburton Inc” to solve the problems of the new nation. The State Department must regain its status as a premier agency on the international stage. Mr. Bush, the states are awash in fiscal difficulty, pensioners are going broke due to the Enron’s, Tyco’s, and Global Crossings of the world and your administration has done nothing to stop the nation’s economic slide. The Dollar continues to be weak against the Euro and the Pound, and unemployment is still plaguing the nation. IBM announced that they were going to start hiring again. Great news, if you live in India where the jobs will be located. So, Mr. Bush as you give your last State of the Union address tonight, be prepared to explain what went wrong and not “what is right with wealth”. Bin Laden remains at large, and our troops continue to die in Iraq, your mission is far from accomplished. I hope your ranch is comfortable because, I see the moving vans coming down Pennsylvania Avenue.
