From the Bookshelf: Al Franken’s Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them Having a week to go before school starts up again, and the fact that this book was lying around the house, I decided to crack open Al Franken’s wonderful book on the Conservative Reich. Damm spell checker I meant Reich. Crap, it did it again, maybe if I turn it off. Oh! Here we go “Conservative Right”. Any pundit of the conservative right, from Ann Coulter, Bill O’Reilly, all the way up to Dick Cheney and Shrub are exposed as hacks, frauds, and no good lowlifes. Coulter’s arguments are blown out of the water by Franken’s extensive research. He actually reads the New York Times rather then Coulter’s sorry excuse for reading. O’Reilly is exposed as a talent less hack and a liar. The selections from O’Reilly’s fictional book (would make a great introduction for an adult film) are tied together with events from the 2000 election. O’Reilly is even cornered into explaining what type of award “Inside Edition” actually won. But, the most intriguing and eye-opening section of the book is the section entitled “Operation Ignore”. Much of the information was reported in the news media in such news programs as “Frontline”, but is getting very little airplay during this campaign cycle. Franken discusses how the current administration ignored the repeated warnings from the outgoing Clinton administration about a little threat in the Middle East. The moment the Captain on the ship decided to take some shore leave (Bush has spent more days outside of D.C. then any other President) Al Qaeda graduated up to major league threat status. Sandy Berger and George Tenant, NSA and CIA respectively, warned the Bush administration about the terrorist threat. Berger even attempted to schedule briefings with Rice over the one thing the new administration would spend “most of their time on.” FBI agents during the Clinton Administration even alluded to the possibility of the WTC attacks during the arrest of Zacharias Mousouri. The plans for the Homeland Security Dept. and the war in Afghanistan were also developed during the Clinton Years (It’s nice that he had some free time for a little fling with an intern). Bush blew the dust off these plans while running around the country in Air Force One. Now don’t get me wrong. I respect the Office of the President, the role of the President in the federal system and the purpose of the Office in International Affairs. However, when the guy in the office makes the trips and falls of Gerald Ford look like they were rehearsed, then Bush is fair game. The Republicans have been able to unleash attack after attack on the Left, now, through the insight of Franken, and other notables in the Democratic Party, the Left is going to start to bite back. Were not going to stoop to their level however, we’re going to tell it like it is and how it is, rather then saying, “it’s our way or the highway.”
