From the Bookshelf: On Democracy Having very little to do over my winter break I have decided to catch up on some reading that I have always wanted to do. One of the books I have always wanted to read is Dahl's On Democracy. This book is a primer on Democracy. It helps to clarify some of the misconceptions of a word that has been used by politicians in this country and points out some of the problems democracy faces. I have yet to finish the book, but it has been an interesting read so far. What is most interesting is how our democracy in America today did not come about though the Constitution, but rather through various gives and takes throughout the 250+ years of the United States. Universal adult suffrage did not occur until the 19th century. Other issues are also present through education and deliberation, and the setting of the national agenda. Democracy also tends to support the creation of a free market economy. But as most of us are aware, a free market creates another set of problems that conflict with democratic ideals. Most of Dahl's information in the book I was aware of in some shape or form, but having the whole argument in one book makes democracy easier to understand. Later...WDR
