CNN.com - California sharply raises public university fees - Jul. 16, 2003 UGH!!! We already live in one of the most expensive states in the nation, now we have to pay more to get less. Talk about tarnishing the Golden State. As a Democrat this is the worst move that Davis could have taken. While few college students vote on a routine basis, they do sign petitions and vote when the issues effect them to a high degree. The fee increase is going to hurt me, my fellow students and our parents. Independent students will be swimming in debt in order to pay their way through school, working two or even three jobs. (And professors wonder why the quality of work done by students is so poor!) If they are having a hard time gathering signatures for the recall, the fee increase effectively signed Davis's pink slip. I am personally looking at a $900 graduation penalty! Is there a positive in all of this? Fewer students would be able to afford to go to college, creating more seats for current students. Those future students have to go somewhere and as one newspaper mentioned (the LA Times), the last fee increase created an unemployment spike of 200,000 jobs. Education is the great equalizer, it helps to build and enlighten at the same time. If California is unable to fund the finest public universities in the nation, then consider this the beginning of the end. I'm voting for someone else!
